Daniel E. Lieberman is the Edwin M. Lerner II Professor of Biological Sciences and a professor in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He has received degrees from both Harvard and Cambridge and has previously taught at Rutgers University and George Washington University before joining Harvard in 2001. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Lieberman focuses on how evolutionary history impacts human health and disease.
His research combines experimental biomechanics, anatomy, and physiology, often conducted in field locations such as Kenya and Mexico. Lieberman is particularly recognized for his studies on the evolution of running, walking, and throwing, as well as the evolution of the human head. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals and authored three popular books, including 'The Evolution of the Human Head' and 'The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease.' In his leisure time, he enjoys running, sometimes barefoot, which has earned him the nickname 'the Barefoot Professor.'
