Thomas Insel, M.D., is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist recognized for his leadership in mental health research, policy, and technology. He served as the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) from 2002 to 2015, where he was instrumental in advancing mental health initiatives. Following his tenure at NIMH, Dr. Insel led the Mental Health Team at Verily from 2015 to 2017, focusing on integrating technology into mental health care.
In 2017, he co-founded Mindstrong Health, a startup aimed at developing innovative tools for individuals with serious mental illnesses. Dr. Insel has also played a significant role in advising governmental bodies on mental health issues, including serving as a special advisor to California Governor Gavin Newsom in 2019. He co-founded Humanest Care in 2020, which is a therapeutic online community designed to support recovery. Currently, he is the Chair of the Board of the Steinberg Institute and is involved with several other organizations dedicated to mental health.
