Current Positions
Andrew B. Newberg, M.D. holds significant positions at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital in Philadelphia. He is presently the Director of Research at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and a Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Radiology.
Education and Certifications
Dr. Newberg graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1993. He pursued his training in Internal Medicine at the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, where he also served as Chief Resident. Following this, he completed a Fellowship in Nuclear Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania's Division of Nuclear Medicine, Department of Radiology. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Nuclear Medicine.
Research Interests
Throughout his career, Dr. Newberg has been closely involved with several neuroimaging research projects. His works have extended to the study of aging and dementia, epilepsy, and various neurological and psychiatric disorders. He has shown a particular interest in the study of mystical and religious experiences and the general mind/body relationship. His other research areas include understanding the physiological correlates of acupuncture therapy, meditation, and other alternative therapies.
Teaching Experience and Publications
Dr. Newberg's educational contributions encompass teaching medical students, undergraduate and graduate students, and medical residents. His subjects of instruction include stress management, spirituality and health, and the neurophysiology of religious experience. He has an extensive list of publications, including numerous articles and chapters on brain function, brain imaging, and the study of religious and mystical experiences.
Books
He has co-authored several best-selling books, including "How God Changes Your Brain" and "Why God Won't Go Away: Brain Science and the Biology of Belief." Other books authored by him include "Words Can Change Your Brain" and "Born to Believe: God, Science, and the Origin of Ordinary and Extraordinary Beliefs." He has also authored "Principles of Neurotheology" and "The Mystical Mind: Probing the Biology of Belief," both exploring the relationship between neuroscience and spiritual experience. His book "The Mystical Mind" was awarded the 2000 Outstanding Books in Theology and the Natural Sciences by the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences.
