Irvin David Yalom is an American existential psychiatrist and an emeritus professor of psychiatry at Stanford University. He has made significant contributions to the field of psychiatry, particularly in the area of existential psychotherapy. In addition to his academic role, Yalom is currently in private practice in Palo Alto and San Francisco, California.
Yalom is also a prolific author, having written both fiction and nonfiction. His notable works include 'The Gift of Therapy,' 'Love's Executioner,' and 'When Nietzsche Wept.' With over 70 published works, he has influenced both therapists and patients through his writings, which often explore the human condition and the therapeutic process.
