Nassim Nicholas Taleb has a rich history in the finance sector, having spent over two decades as a risk taker. He then transitioned to a full-time essayist and scholar, concentrating on practical, philosophical, and mathematical problems related to chance, luck, and probability—with a particular interest in how different systems handle disorder. Nowadays, he devotes most of his time to solitary research in his study or meditating in cafés as a flâneur.
Taleb's experience extends beyond trading. He served as an academic researcher for several years, with 12 years as a Distinguished Professor at New York University's School of Engineering and as a Dean's Professor at U. Mass Amherst.
Authorship
He is the author of the Incerto (Latin for uncertainty), a series of books that can be read in any order. The series includes 'Skin in the Game', 'Antifragile', 'The Black Swan', 'The Bed of Procrustes', and 'Fooled by Randomness'. A technical version also exists, 'The Technical Incerto (Statistical Consequences of Fat Tails)'.
Academic Contributions
In addition to his book series, Taleb has published approximately 55 academic and scholarly papers, serving as technical footnotes to the Incerto. These papers cover diverse topics ranging from Statistical Physics and Quantitative Finance to Genetics and International affairs. The Incerto series itself has been translated into more than 50 languages.
Philosophy
Taleb espouses the belief that prizes, honorary degrees, awards, and ceremonialism devalue knowledge by turning it into a spectator sport. He has been described by La Tribune (Paris) as an erudite skeptic with solid mathematical training, a restless globetrotter, polyglot, wine connoisseur, and financial derivatives specialist, who is an avid reader and prone to slapping a disciple. Renowned as a "giant of Mediterranean thought" and the "hottest thinker in the world" by the London Times, and "the most prophetic voice of all" by GQ.
