Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius

About

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was a Roman emperor who reigned from 161 to 180 AD and is renowned as a Stoic philosopher. Born into an upper-class Roman family in 121 AD, he was adopted by Antoninus Pius, his predecessor. His rule is noted for military campaigns, particularly against Parthia, but was also marked by challenges such as a devastating plague and internal revolts. He is recognized as the last of the Five Good Emperors and the final emperor of the Pax Romana, a period characterized by relative peace in the Roman Empire.

A lifelong student of philosophy, Marcus Aurelius was significantly influenced by the teachings of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus. His philosophical reflections are encapsulated in his work 'Meditations,' which he wrote during his later years, primarily for his own guidance rather than for public dissemination. This work has since become a cornerstone of Stoic literature, offering insights into personal ethics and the nature of human existence. Marcus Aurelius passed away in 180 AD while engaged in military campaigns against barbarian tribes.
