Education and Training
Steven Gundry MD, F.A.C.S., F.A.C.C., is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. He graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine and completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Gundry served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health for several years.
Inventions and Innovations
As a distinguished medical professional, Dr. Gundry invented devices that reverse acute heart attacks cell death; variations of these devices later became the world-renowned Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula, the world's most widely used device for open-heart surgery. He made significant contributions to the field of xenotransplantation and secured early FDA approval for robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Gundry holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels sans sutures and repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine.
Professional Appointments
After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was appointed as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. During his tenure, he pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. As an active member of the medical community, Dr. Gundry has served in various key directions, including as President of the Board of Directors at the American Heart Association, Desert Division.
Research and Publications
Dr. Gundry is a prolific medical researcher and writer, with three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts published in peer-reviewed journals on subjects ranging from surgical, immunology, genetics, nutrition, to plant-based diets and lipid investigations.
Career Shift and Advocacy
In 2002, a critical encounter with "Big Ed", an "inoperable" patient changed Dr. Gundry's career trajectory significantly. Inspired by the impact of dietary changes, he focused on the pursuit of health and longevity through better diet and lifestyle. He established The International Heart and Lung Institute and Center of Restorative Medicine in Santa Barbara and Palm Springs, California, to prevent and reverse chronic diseases.

Personal Life
Dr. Gundry lives with his wife, Penny, and their dogs in Palm Springs and Montecito, California. His two grown daughters live nearby as well.
